The Well of Wisdom Within
I wonder how the journey to the inner
well of wisdom that holds nourishment
of spirit and mind will go today?
Will the path be steep, scented with musk
before the bubbling, rocky mountain stream
comes into view midst the forest trees?
Will I gingerly walk the dirt path of a
familiar field and settle in near a
farm pond lined with smooth stones and flowers?
I wonder if I’ll find a perch by the small
fountain that is fed by an artisan
well, that flows from the underground spring?
At sunset, will I find my way to a beach,
sink toes in the sand, and listen to the
powerful waves roll in and in?
No matter where my mind wanders, the water
flows into my soul and through my being
until I know Creator and I are one.
Once nourished, healed, and energized from the well
within my true essence, peace and
unity are wildly dispersed in celebration.
Sensing Beauty, Part II
The scripture from the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John is often illustrated with a drawing of Jesus and the Samaritan woman standing next to a well as she draws water in the middle of the day. Jesus helps her understand that no matter who she is, or what she has done; she can know the love of God by drawing water from the well. This artisan well is within and is an endless life-giving fountain.
We are also invited to that well through prayer and meditation. The examples given in the accompanying poetry were shared by women at the spiritual retreat two weeks ago. We were meeting at the Brownville Riverboat Inn while envisioning where we’d go to the find the well of wisdom.
You can go there, too. Whether sitting on your deck or porch, or watching the sunrise, you can access the well that resides in the deepest part of yourself. Often it is the hidden well that most surprises and delights us!
May you accept the invitation to take the hand of Jesus and go to the space of deep understanding. As the words of the beautiful, old hymn reads:
There is a place of quiet rest,
near to the heart of God,
a place where sin cannot molest,
near to the heart of God.
Refrain:
O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
sent from the heart of God,
hold us, who wait before thee,
near to the heart of God.
There is a place of comfort sweet,
near to the heart of God,
a place where we our Savior meet,
near to the heart of God.
There is a place of full release,
near to the heart of God,
a place where all is joy and peace,
near to the heart of God.
God’s joy, peace, and hope dwell within your spirit,
Marta
