Water
is forcefully pushed
straight up and out from the
center of the fountain.
Flowing with nature this Divine
Messenger
resists not.

Bending
to the north as the
invisible energy
of the southerly winds
from the Unpredictable
Life-force push
Through and through.

Strength flows
through my veins, and whilst
contemplating that wild Mystery
of the water, yielding
to the overpowering wind
pushing up
then rocks on.

I listen.
And hear my God’s voice
pouring into the wind
and the flowing water.
Especially when troubles come
This pure
voice transforms.

Water
Is mysterious.
Holy streams flow within
each of our human hearts.
Together, with saints in heaven
the lake forms.
Incredible!

The wind has been blowing so strongly that I find myself capping my head of fine, silvery hair nearly every day so that I don’t appear as the wild woman I am!

For many years, I have found comfort in the belief from a Native American tribe that God is in the wind.

The gospel of John provides consolation about the wind and the Spirit as well.

“The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes,
but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going.
It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
John 3:8 Good News Translation

In my life, the Spirit of God has blown through repeatedly, each time in ways that suit my emotional and spiritual needs. Perhaps like me, you’ve identified with the mama bird who is attempting to bring a worm back to the nest for her babies. The wind pushes her back again and again, yet she never stops trying and eventually gets her babies fed. She does not give up but builds fortitude for the next time.

There are times that we feel the need to snuggle into our nests and get out of the wind to process life and what it means to us. Yet the warm winds of the Spirit know no bounds and may blow into our nests, strengthening discouraged hearts with an overwhelming sensation of God’s compassionate love.

Feeling relieved, we are ready to soar on the winds like the cranes or eagles. While walking a labyrinth this morning, I was blessed by the flight of migrating seagulls overhead as the sun rose in the east. A light breeze energized me for another day.

We offer up prayers for all of you, in whatever way you struggle, and pray that the winds of the Spirit will come unexpectedly upon you. Gently yield to the One giving you direction and peace in your lives.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Marta Wheeler
